The Miracle of Crowdfunding: UPDATE 4 - Time management, more filming and filming style (30/06/2014)

This update is relevant to both the Cinema documentary and The Miracle of Crowdfunding video/practice filming.

The filming style section is the main point of this post because it will have bearing in the Cinema documentary.

Schedules and time management - administration

We have to get on top of our schedules if we want to make the most of the summer and the autumn.

Therefore, put together a to-do list of all the projects, uni assignments and other stuff - EVERYTHING - you would like to get done throughout the summer and we will co-ordinate our schedules tomorrow.

New draft of TMOC script...

The 6th draft of the script will be done tonight and I will print out a copy we can break down tomorrow morning.

All the previous drafts of the script are now located in this Google Drive Folder

Filming style and spontaneously shooting something of potential worth

Okay, so... basically...

Conventional shot - easy peasy

This is what I would call a conventional shot and conventional shots are easy to pull off - they take care of themselves.

The composition of conventional shots are easy to pull off because these types of shots we see everywhere in everything and, because of this, we kind of don't see them, because they are so generically familiar.

Unconventional shot - this is a really good and unusual shot.

Unconventional shots are equally easy to pull off - BUT, only when you start to ignore the noise in your immediate physical and generic surroundings. When you cancel out the normalness of something you start to see it in a varaity of new and tantalisingly different ways.

Unconventional shots and subject matter are integral to REALLY GREAT filmmaking because they point out something that most other people would usually miss.

I am not saying that everything has to be unconventional - because then it just become the new conventional noise. What I am saying is that you need a bit of unconventional here and there to re-vitalise the conventional elements.

Spontaneously shooting - getting good at capturing random stuff that might be useful later on

Being observant to the point where you feel compelled to film something even if it is not something you planned to film but which you feel is in some way connected to what you are making is integral to documentary making all good filmmaking.

This is a skill we need to cultivate to the point of perfection!

I never planned on using the long grass in the video and now it has become integral to the whole thing.

Such as this...

I am going to put this in the main crowdfunding video because it sums me up - I make up my mind and then I change my mind.

What I am saying - and this will be vital for the cinema documentary - is that we need to get in the habit of filming stuff spontaneously what you feel may be relevant to the eventual result even if it is not in the plan and even if you need to get it in the heat of the moment.

If you watch 3:00 - 4:00 of the following video you will see what I mean...

Okay, that is that, I will see you bright and early tomorrow morning at 9am - meet outside Commons and get a good nights sleep.
